Artist: All Participant Artists
Title: Layers of Cell Exploration
Year: 2005
Material: Video, Pictures, Objects
Statement:
This is more a collective work of all the five artists who have participated in this project than a record of the formation of their ideas. It is like different layers of a rock stratum, through which you will be able to realize the transition of how the artists develop their works and the decisive factors in the process. You can also find out how the relationship between the artists changes within this period.
However, the works that you see in this space are merely a result of the present phrase. It is your participation that plays the crucial part to make this project a whole. Please feel free to express your ideas or opinions. Welcome to be part of us!

Title: Who is the One that Occupies Your Body?
Year: 2005
Material: Video Installation
Artist Statement:
Who are you?
Do you know who you are?
Have you ever doubted whether you really know who you are?
Are you the one who has been calling out from your body labyrinth?
Are you the one who has been strolling inside your imprisoned body?
Are you the one who has entered your body or the one who has been expelled?
Are you the one who owns your soul or the one who drifts around?
Have you ever doubted who you really are?
Whether you have or haven’t, isn’t it the next question for you:
“Who am I?”

Title: The Cold Foreign Country
Year: 2005
Material: Rope, Actors
Artist Statement:
This is a work that can inspire one’s spirit through the image “space”. On entering this extremely low space, the attention is immediately captured by the archways connecting one after another. It seems that the audience is enveloped in a surrealistic atmosphere created by the “Maze of Prison Cells”. This is a place bearing the burden of the past and alien cultures, a place where the prisoners left their traces behind.
Following these traces, the “abnormal”, “surrealism” and “the consciousness of existence” hence become the theme of the work. These three topics tackle either abstract or spiritual issues. The artist presents them by using images of human body and narration. She has taken into consideration the mobility of the audience and the character of this multi-angle and scattered place. Therefore, she intentionally reserves some extempore and interactive spaces for the audience. The work is divided into five sections under the titles of: “Mono-tune Skating”, “Closure”, “Kafka-fka”, “Exotic Flowers / Space” and “Angelic Death under the Fireworks”.

Title: Wanderer in the Space
Year: 2005
Material: Guitar, Audio, Drum, Microphone
Artist Statement:
Along with the stroke of each note from the guitar, all of the sounds that once occurred in the cells collide with each other. The imagination starts with the beat, a battery, a pen and the friction of the guitar. The year of 2005, the 19th century, salty sea breeze, the ghost-like frequency, the staggering steps, children’s play, and flies buzzing in the faint light...
Accompanied by the music, vocal, and dancer, the resonance from the walls and the consonance of the guitar are mixed to express the sincerest feelings now and then. One cannot stop wondering whether it is the note struck at present or it is a continued vibration from the dweller of the past. The dialogue between the performer and the walls continues: the notes hang in the air and dwelled in the minds and hearts of the audience….

Title: Ana Swinhoe (1976-)
Year: 2005
Material: Narration, Objects, Documents, Photograph, Image Installation
Artist Statement:
Robert Swinhoe, a British museologist in the Victorian period, was the first to systematically investigate the wild fauna and flora in Taiwan. He came to Kaohsiung as the vice-consul in June, 1861. Shou Shan, where the former British Consulate is situated, was the spot where he encountered many native animals such as macaque, eagles, bamboo partridge and butterflies.
The artist, together with Mr. Swinhoe’s great grand-daughter, who now lives in Birmingham, England, re-exam his investigation into natural species and the documents of the natural history in the 19th century Taiwan. By placing Swinhoe’s past investigation in the present space, the artist and her partner lay on a wonderfully juxtapose the past and the present.
